The NSFAS criteria for Unisa students include being a first-year or returning student, having a household income of R350,000 or less per year for able-bodied students, R600,000 or less per year for students with disabilities, South African citizenship or permanent residency, and pursuing their first undergraduate qualification.

In addition to covering tuition and registration fees, NSFAS provides allowances for accommodation, meals, and learning materials.
