How to Apply for Admission

All applications must be submitted online within the designated application period. Visit the Unisa application website for more information.

Admission for Qualifications Completed Outside South Africa

  • A list of acceptable school qualifications for admission per country can be found Hear
  • Conditional exemption certificates are facilitated by Unisa for undergraduate qualifications. A separate fee is applicable for the Matriculation Board to issue the conditional exemption certificate.
  • Exemption certificates are not required for master’s or doctoral qualifications.

Application Fee Payment

  • The non-refundable online application fee is R135.00.
  • Students with an existing Unisa student number for a formal qualification are exempt from paying the application fee.

Undergraduate Qualifications:

  • Copy of school qualifications (refer to list)
  • Copy of tertiary academic qualifications (if applicable)
  • Copy of passport
  • Marriage/divorce certificates if applicable
  • Sworn translations if documents are not in English/Afrikaans
  • M30 form for conditional exemption (if applying for a bachelor degree)

Honours and Postgraduate Diplomas:

  • Copies of official academic records
  • Copy of passport
  • Marriage/divorce documents if applicable
  • SAQA certificate of evaluation (if applicable)

Master’s and Doctoral Qualifications:

  • Copies of official academic records
  • Copy of ID/passport
  • Research outline, CV, and other specified documents
  • Letter of permission for certain qualifications
  • SAQA certificate of evaluation (if applicable)

SAQA Evaluation

  • SAQA evaluates foreign qualifications for recognition within the South African National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
  • Unisa only accepts SAQA certificates of evaluation.

NQF Levels and Qualifications

  • Different qualifications have different NQF levels.
  • NQF levels are used to determine minimum admission requirements.

Funding for Foreign Students

  • The government is assessing foreign student subsidies, which might lead to increased fees.
  • Unisa reserves the right to charge fees in foreign countries’ currencies.
